Effects vs. filters
A filter is a colour layer sitting on top of your photo. Turn it up too far and the picture just looks tinted. An effect regenerates the image: it can relight your face, change the material of a jacket, place you in a different room, or turn a portrait into a collectible figurine.
That is why an effect can survive a bad original. A flat, grey indoor selfie has no dramatic light to enhance, but an effect can add it.
Choosing the right effect for a photo
Cinematic effects want a clear face and a simple background, because they add contrast and directional light, so a cluttered original fights the result.
Retro and film effects are forgiving. Grain, softness and colour shifts hide small imperfections, which makes them a good choice for older photos and screenshots.
Figurine, sticker and object effects need the subject clearly separated from the background. A full-body or waist-up shot against a plain wall gives the cleanest cut-out.
Getting a sharper result
Start with the highest-resolution copy you have. A photo re-saved through several chat apps has already lost detail, and no effect can restore it.
Keep one main subject. Effects that must reinterpret four faces at once spread their attention and each face gets less of it.
